How
does it work?
PayPal,
with over 4 million users, is the most popular online form of payment
at eBay. It operates as a sort of central bank. Users take a few
minutes to set up an account and then tie that account to a credit
card and/or a bank account. From there on out, all transactions
are done using an email address - credit card numbers and bank account
numbers are held by PayPal and never seen or used by either party
during a transaction. This makes it safe to just use basic email
to complete transactions.
The
sender must confirm every payment by entering their password at
the PayPal site. You don't need to even have any money in your PayPal
account to pay someone. It will charge your credit card if you like.
The recipient doesn't have to do anything. They are simply notified
that money just got deposited into their account, which they can
sweep into their bank account at will. And it doesn't cost either
party one cent.
Merchants
can use PayPal also. In fact it allows anyone to accept credit cards
without ever qualifying for and setting up a merchant account AND
it's cheaper (a 1.9% transaction fee versus the 2.5% up to 4% fee
that most merchants pay on credit card transactions). What's more,
it allows a PayPal enabled merchant to accept electronic payments
from individuals that don't have or can't get a credit card.
It's
slick as snot! This is definitely the future of payments on the
Internet and perhaps the future of money.
