Many self-described hardcore independent travelers dismiss Balmers as just being one big frat party. Depending on your perspective, I guess this could be a good thing or a bad thing. It's true that there's a lot of Americans here, but that doesn't diminish the fact that Balmers is one of the most well run hostels in Europe. It's clean. They've got a restaurant, a bar, and a nightclub. There's a ton of day trips for adrenaline junkies and everything is organized for you.

To many a green backpacker, Balmers is an oasis away from the disorganization and often structureless reality that months upon months of backpacking can represent. The one disappointing aspect of the hostel is that some of their dorms are huge and you may well get packed in with 20 or 30 people in a single room. Be sure to check out Balmers tent during the summer.
