Banana Bungalow Hawaii
Waikiki, Hawaii, USA

#15 Ranked Hostel in the World

Inside Report

This high-rise hostel is located about 3 blocks for one of the most famous beaches in the world. Deservingly so, Waikiki Beach, a picturesque beach guarded on one end by the dormant volcano Diamond Head, was once the surfing playground of Hawaiian royalty. Today it's mostly a concrete jungle tourist trap that can be quite expensive, but it can still be a lot of fun if you don't go there expecting an uninhabited tropical paradise.

Do your homework and you can do Waikiki on the cheap if you go where the locals go - on one side of the street, Mai Tai's are twelve bucks a pop, while across the street halfway down the alley they have beers for a quarter every Sunday night.

While Waikiki isn't exactly a tropical paradise, you don't have to go very far out of town to find one… the rest of the island is magnificent and shouldn't be missed. The best way to get a feel for the island is to rent some scooters and go exploring.

Back to the hostel… there's plenty to do at the hostel and they plan many day trips, but hey, you're in Hawaii, and people here only go inside at night to sleep. The nightlife is good here, but don't let it get in the way of your seeing the real treasures of Hawaii.
