Naomi Hills Cattle Station
Dingo, Australia

#12 Ranked Hostel in the World

Inside Report

Wanna get a taste of the true grit lifestyle of the Australian cowboy in the outback? This fully operational cattle ranch is in a town called Dingo in the middle of sparse central Queensland. While the hostel is probably 20 miles from anywhere, even the next house, there are a few unique activities to keep the adventuresome traveler occupied. They have a whole stable of horses that you can take out for a ride, or a weekend. Never ridden a horse? They don't care, just hop on and give'r a go… this is Australia after all and anything goes. That's the real beauty of Australia, if you want to do something you can, but you do it at your own risk - they don't believe in blaming someone else if you get hurt.

Since Dingo is near gem country (a long daytrip), you can also try your hand at sapphire mining. You get a hard hat, a wheelbarrow, a jackhammer and they send you down into the mine shaft. It's hard work, but you get to keep your bounty. It's rumored that a few lucky souls struck it rich.

The hostel has a nightly dinner and a bar for all the guests. There's only one rule at the cattle station… be respectful of others. Other than that, you can do anything you want - and I mean anything. Isn't this how it should always be?
