This bohemian hostel is about a 15 minute walk from infamous Bourbon Street in New Orleans, the Mardi Gras capital of the US. The India House really is a big house that was converted into a hostel. It has a cozy atmosphere, but it's not exactly the cleanest place in town. They have a pool in the backyard that they call the "Indian Ocean", and a big living room where backpackers can pre-funk on the cheap before hitting the town. There's no bar, but they have a beer machine that does the trick.

New Orleans isn't the most aromatically pleasing town, but if you can get past this, it's a hell of a lot of fun. Imagine an American town that actually has a rich cultural feel. You can step into any bar and hear some of the best live music in the world for free. The Cajon fare is worth a taste… you'll either love it or hate it. New Orleans really is a must see town, but come prepared for a taste of hedonism because on Bourbon Street, the party never really ends.

How do you get there?

From the train station...

Walk left on Loyola to Canal St. Take buses 41,42 or 43 towards the Cemeteries. Get off at Lopez and Canal and walk left to #124.

From the bus station...

From the Greyhound station - Walk left on Loyola to Canal St. Take buses 41,42 or 43 towards the Cemeteries. Get off at Lopez and Canal and walk left to #124.

From the airport...

Take the Downtown Express Bus to the corner of Tulane and S. Lopez Street and walk left on S. Lopez to #124.

By car...

From I10 Westbound:
Exit at Canal Street/Superdome, go to traffic lights and turn left onto Canal Street. Drive up Canal, until the 3200 block (corner of Canal and S. Lopez on the left).

From I10 Eastbound:
Exit at Metairie Road/City Park Ave., go to traffic lights and turn left. At next traffic lights, turn right onto Canal St. (there is a filter lane for right turning traffic). Drive down Canal until you reach the 3200 block (corner of Canal St. and S. Lopez on the right).

Note that since South Lopez is a one-way street and you can't access it from Canal St. The hostel is located in the 1st block, so just go around the block.
