- Kings & Queens
London, UK - Windsor Castle
We
spent today visiting Windsor Castle - the Official Residence
of The Queen. (She only lives there 5 weeks a year, though,
go figure) It was an interesting trip. The castle is huge
- far bigger than we imagined it would be. It has been inhabited
for over 900 years and is still a working palace. We were
able to tour the State Apartments, which have been kept
in their 18th and 19th century states, and resemble the
quarters still used by the Royal Family. There was also
an impressive display of armor, weapons and art dating back
to the 17th century, as well as an enormous doll house given
to Queen Mary (amazing detail). Unfortunately, you are not
allowed to take pictures inside the castle, but we snapped
a few outside and settled for some good postcards.
I
(Lisa) especially enjoyed St. George's chapel. I'm always
fascinated by churches, especially European churches. This
chapel was beautiful and peaceful and is the burial site
for many of England's Kings and Queens. It was interesting
to make my way through and read the memorials of both famous
and not so famous people.
After
touring the castle we stopped for lunch and made our way
through some of the town's shops. Again, so many tempting
items, so little pack space....
